Gangs in America essays
Gangs in America essays Gangs are a violent reality that people have to deal with in today's cities. What has made these groups come about? Why do some kids feel that being in a gang is an acceptable and prestigious way to live? There are many different theories to these questions. On the surface, gangs may appear to be shallow and materialistic; a result of human beings' personal wants, but there are speculations that are more profound. In reference to the way humans are influenced in society, there is valid evidence to distribute blame at negative forces of economic disadvantages, child neglect, media, as well as other important factors. Along with gang membership comes easy gains for the gang member. The gang members are easily consumed with the money, power, protection, and thrill of being a part of something they feel is great. Instead of committing to a 9 to 5 job, considering if the unemployment rate would permit it, gang members can easily get the desirables all rolled into the package that accompanies gang initiation. They get the sense of identity, status, and boost in self-esteem that human nature craves. The risks that these gang members take on include loosing their lives to the spur of a few short-term thrills. Gang life is predicated on immediate economic gain from drug and other crime profits and as well as social gain. Mainstream life is oriented toward the future, and social and material gains are slower but steadier, more reliable, and less risky. Even though, the material gains seem to be the obvious temptation, there are deeper meanings to why these children turn to gangs. Gang members are being influenced by a society in which while the negative forces of drugs, guns, gangs, and media have become more threatening, the positive socializing forces of family, school, religion, and neighborhood have grown relatively weak and ineffective. Increasingly, children are being raised in homes disrupted by divorce and economic stress; too m...

Starbucks Corporation. SWOT Analysis Research Paper
Starbucks Corporation. SWOT Analysis - Research Paper Example In keeping with the case study, it can be ascertained that the employees in Starbucks used to follow the trend of informal dress-code. The casual dress-code fosters a stress-free environment within the organization. Furthermore, Howard Schultz, the vice president of the company perceived a vision of making Starbucks a national company. He wanted to incorporate values and policies, which will ensure goodwill and trust of the customers along with the employees. The new Starbucks established by Howard Schultz operated 9 stores. However, the newly formed management lacked experience, which stands to be the weakness of the new establishment. In order to overcome the challenges pertaining to management issues, Lawrence Maltz was appointed as the executive vice-president. His skills and strategies provided a new edge to the company (Shah et al., 2006). Correspondingly, the strategy of the company to expand its business in Chicago resulted in challenges. According to the case study, the Chicagoans did not prefer ââ¬ËDark Roastedââ¬â¢ Coffee, which was a major weakness of the management strategy. Furthermore, the expenses incurred in the product processing in Chicago were much higher as compared to that of Seattle. Furthermore, the rent was also very high along with the wage rate. Starbucks expenses increased in Chicago store. In this regard, the advanced strategies taken by the companyââ¬â¢s management included increasing labor costs and maintaining higher rents. This strategy ensured higher profits for the company in Chicago. Another key strength area of the Starbucks was its workplace environment. The management of the company endured a strong belief that the employees higher pay scale and fringe benefits act as a mechanism to attract the skilled and motivated individuals as the workforce. The strategies formulated to att ract the human capital acts as one of the major strengths of the company. After acquiring a better position in the homeland, Starbucks decided to expand its operations beyond national boundaries. It had planned two differentiated strategies, i.e. either to establish a company owned and operated store or to provide license to a local company to promote the Starbuckââ¬â¢s products. Uncontrolled expansion of the Starbucks operating store can be termed as a decisive weakness. It has been observed that the company plans for the expansion at the cost of their being different from others. It earned profit in the international market based on its premium coffee brand that has differentiated characteristics, which can be termed as one of the companyââ¬â¢s weaknesses (Shah et al., 2006). Starbucks expansion plan to operate its stores internationally can be regarded as a major opportunity for the company. This strategy of the company provides it an opportunity to gain advantage over the international competitors. Moreover, the product line expansion of Starbucks also renders it major growth opportunities. The continuous innovation and commitment of the company had been rewarded in the internatio

Establish the purpose and usefulness of a professional portfolio Assignment
Establish the purpose and usefulness of a professional portfolio. Establish the components of your professional portfolio - Assignment Example The most challenging steps in the four-step job process are the preparation and planning stages (Ferrett, 2002). These are considered challenging because it requires discerning oneââ¬â¢s professional goals and a determination of genuine interests in a wide range of employment opportunities. Likewise, oneââ¬â¢s strengths and even weaknesses have to be accurately assessed, acknowledged and addressed prior to confirming application in intended fields of endeavor. On the other hand, under the planning stage, it would initially be difficult to create oneââ¬â¢s schedule of activities and incorporate them in current and future plans. As emphasized, the implementation of this step requires commitment and determination; especially in creating schedules of interviews, following up applications, returning and responding to call or correspondences, as required. Microsoft Excel Essay Example for Free
Microsoft Excel Essay F(x) = x2/36, for 0 thru 6, this is the distribution function that can be further simplified r1 = x2/36, to simplify set the equation equal to r1 x = 6 * SQRT (r1), final equation. Lost Revenue Jet Copies demonstrates a uniform probability distribution as it pertains to the number of copies sold per day. The average sale is between 2,000 through 8,000 copies a day, at $0. 10 a copy. This number is denoted on the excel spreadsheet as r3 by generating a random number between 2,000 and 8,000. To calculate the total amount of business lost on any given day, the following calculations utilized: Lost Revenue = repair time * r3 * 0. 10 The total amount of lost revenue is $20,166. 30. This number is not totally accurate, but is an approximation of lost. The amount will always change significantly because r1, r2, and r3 are numbers generated randomly. To get a close approximation the breakdown will have to consist of 365 to account for the total days in the year. Also, the lost revenue could be determined another way. Too calculate this amount, multiple the repair days and the estimated number of loss customers, multiplied by the number of copies that could have been produced, not exceeding 365 days. It will benefit Jet Copies to purchase a new copier. Their lost revenue exceeds the cost of purchasing a new copier by $12,166. 30. Jet Copies could afford to purchase two new copiers at the loss Jet ââ¬Å"Copies will experience. The answer illustrated in the excel spreadsheet I am very confident with. Regardless of how many times I run the simulation, the numbers will never be the same because they are random. There are many limits to the study. First, the time up to a year will not always be accurate. Also, if you change one number, the whole spreadsheet numbers change. But of most importance, the simulation needs to be generated several times to come as close to accurate as possible, concerning revenue loss. Jet Copies simulation results are located in the Excel document uploaded to assignment 1. Reference Taylor, B. M. (2010). Introduction to Management Science (10th ed. ). Physics of Black Holes Essay -- physics space black holes
Black holes - the strange scientific phenomenon that has astounded physicists and astronomers alike for decades. Popular subjects in science fiction novels, black holes are one of the greatest enigmas of the scientific world. Even today, the concept of a super-dense ball of matter that not even light can escape from is somewhat farfetched, and many scientists disagree with each other about nearly every aspect of a black hole. This project will attempt to shed some light on these mysterious formations, and will inform you the reader of the most popular and widely accepted theories surrounding them. Karl Schwarzschild is credited with being the brilliant astronomer who developed the concept of black holes. In 1916, using Einstein's general theory of relativity, he began to make calculations about the gravity fields of stars. He concluded that if a huge mass, such as a star, were to be concentrated down to the size of an infintessimal point, the effects of Einstein's relativity would get really fairly extreme. Schwarzschild doubted that a star could get that small, and theorized that if a star did infact shrink upon itself like that, its gravity would remain the same and the planets revolving around it would remain in the same orbits they always had. Since then however, some of Schwarzschild's theories have been disproved, but most of his initial theories hold intact today. The Schwarzschild Radius, the maximum radius a body with a specific mass can have that won't let light escape, is named in his honor, and the equation of which is still in use today: Rs=2MG/(c^2) In truth, English geologist John Michell was the first to suggest the existence of black holes. He referred to them "dark stars" and based his calculations on Newt... ...ke for instance the two images below. The first is a two-dimensional representation of the gravity of a normal star. Imagine any object floating through space as a marble. Said marble rolling along the flat surface of the space will roll into the indentation made by the sun's gravity. If you flick the marble hard enough, it can roll out of the indentation and roll away. The second pic is a representation of the gravity made by a black hole. Notice that if the marble rolls into the hole, there's no way it can get out, since there is no end to the hole. Such prospects are intriguing, and provide science fiction novelists with endless material for their writings. None of these theories have been proved, and since we can't get close enough to a black hole to study one, they're all perfectly valid. Perhaps one day mankind will discover the truths behind black holes.

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas
Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Nightâ⬠by Dylan Thomas BY Lolo-H poem ââ¬Å"Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Nightâ⬠by Dylan Thomas Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, And you, my father, there on that sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Dylan Thomas was a Welsh poet who died tragically young but left a powerful legacy of work. This poem, written to Thomas's dying father, has a strict structure, but an unconventional message. Thoma s encourages his father to rebel and struggle against death, what he calls the ââ¬Å"dying of the light. â⬠Although written for his father, Dylan Thomas himself ironically died the year after his father.Poetry-poem 12. 1 2010: This lesson plan is the property of the Mensa Education ; Research Foundation, www. mensafoundation. org. It is provided as a complimentary service to the public. Reproduction and distribution without modification are allowed. Images, links and linked content referenced herein are the property of the originating entities. Taking it apart Thomas sees lite as a day ââ¬â death is the closing ot that day, and the dying of the light is the sunset and coming night. Notice the pairing of lines 1 ; 3. Gentle matches rage; good with dying; and night with light. This is a mythological allusion to the gods who could throw lightning bolts and have the skies tremble at the sound of their voice. In this stanza, Thomas says that even though men accept that they are mortal and should die (ââ¬Å"Death is rightâ⬠), he still encourages a rebellion against it. Stanza 2 talks about how wise men approach death. This stanza is about how ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠men do. They see the things they did in life reflect like light off of a bay. Rather than being useless, it is the old, near dead, ââ¬Å"graveâ⬠men who can really see. ââ¬Å"Gay' here means ââ¬Å"happy' or ââ¬Å"carefree. ââ¬Å"Notice the oxymorons here: ââ¬Å"blinding sightâ⬠and ââ¬Å"blind eyes. â⬠There is also a simile comparing eyes that ââ¬Å"blaze like meteors. â⬠Curse, bless, me now witn your tierce tears, I pray. From the general men discussed in the previous stanzas, Thomas narrows to his father in this stanza, pleading with him to fight against death, pleading with him to still be ââ¬Å"fierce. â⬠The lines that have been separated throughout the poem come together in the last couplet to reinforce the theme of the poem. Poetry-poem 12. 2 Memorizi ng it The form of this poem is called a villanelle. It has only two end rhyme sounds. The irst and third lines of the stanzas rhyme, and the second line rhymes with all other second lines. A villanelle ends with a rhyming couplet, and has nineteen lines ââ¬â divided into five tercets and one quatrain at the end. The strict villanelle structure and rhyme scheme make this poem particularly easy to memorize, particularly since the last line of the tercets are repetitive: you get five lines memorized for the price of two! You actually get more than that because the line ââ¬Å"Do not go gentle into that good nightâ⬠appears in the poem four times. Using a highlighter or colored pencil, underline the lines that are repeated.

The Legacy Of Super Power - 3409 Words
America is considered one of the greatest nations on the planet not only because of its well-known history of accomplishments but its history in War. The title of ââ¬Å"Super Powerâ⬠has been aimed at us more than other nations. America has proved to be successful in wars and that is something to hold onto and keep. The U.S.A. has its own Hall of History and historical wars, like the war of a Revolution, which gave us our independence of freedom from Great Britain (1600ââ¬â¢s), the Civil War, which was a war fought of separation between the nation into two sides: the Union and the Confederate. Emancipated the slaves and gave African Americans freedom (1800ââ¬â¢s). The First World War (Beginning in 1914 and ending in 1919), that went down as one of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Civil war, World War 1, and World War II are the most impactful and historical events dealing with the United States story and existence. We are going to go through history and research for the causes of America entering in one of these large-scale wars, finding the effects on one of the Great Wars involving the U.S.A., and the chronological events leading to the Battle or Clash. Different views of the many reasons why America has entered in this war are important. Using evidence to back up this research will help us understand the viewpoint which side the victor and America is on. The Great Civil War To do this research on war and its influences on America, the Civil War is an optimal candidate because itââ¬â¢s significant. It was the first war to be fought on American soil besides the American Revolutionary War. The civil war has more deaths than any other war in American involvement history. In the beginning of rivalries of one another in the United States of America, there was a Civil War that had resulted in the bloodiest war in American History. Approximately ââ¬Å"2,128,948 soldiers have served in the Civil Warâ⬠and the after effect of the war was ââ¬Å"Resulting in 620,000 deathsâ⬠(civilwar.org) the Americans came together and formed the United States of America, this would have to take some time of course. Why is it that the great ââ¬Å"Americaâ⬠even dived into a war within itself to begin with? What were the causes of this dispute leading up to
